Many of ThyssenKrupp’s 300 contracts still available
By Dave Perry

”As of June 11, we have awarded about 13% of the total 300 purely construction-related projects to date, states, Scott Posey, director of communications for ThyssenKrupp Steel USA. “All things being equal in terms of a businesses’ ability to do the work relative to the size of the construction project and to complete it in keeping with our tight schedule at a competitive cost, we want to award as many construction-related contracts as possible to Mobile area and Alabama businesses, not just during this temporary phase of the project, but going forward over the long-term operational life of the facility as well.” Posey expects the company to award approximately three contracts in the next 30 days to Mobile companies.

John Boston, TK Procurement Director briefs contractors and suppliers on the $4.7 billion project.
This is good news to the business seekers who attended a briefing held in May. Representatives from ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless Steel USA provided valuable information to businesses that are interested in being potential suppliers and contractors to the international steel making giant.
In May representatives from potential suppliers crowded into the Mobile Civic Center to attend a preview on the process to be used to select suppliers for services and goods. John Boston, TK procurement director, provided an overview of the ThyssenKrupp Steel USA and Stainless Steel USA corporate structures and subsidiaries. “We want to provide an overview and give everyone a sense of where we are with projects and the business opportunities that will be available,“ said Boston.

The procurement method has been designated a fast track process, which means the contracts will be awarded quickly to those suppliers that can deliver an acceptable bid, meet required criteria and specifications, and can provide the service or goods promptly. Boston explained that design, bid, and build would be the format used to get the work completed. He cautions that even though the process is set for those that can react and work quickly; safety will remain paramount for each job awarded.
The construction project has been divided into sixteen areas; each led by a construction coordinator that will work with a team of multiple prime contractors and sub-contractors.
Posey says that contracts will be available after the construction phases have been completed and encourages companies to keep in mind that the construction phase will end in the first quarter of 2010 when the plant is commissioned and begins operations. “While there are currently short-term opportunities to work with us during the construction phase, there will be perhaps even more, long-term opportunities in the areas of out sourcing, services and supplies that will tend to geographically and logistically favor local businesses when we become operational,” Posey said.
